MANDATE:  The Federal Department of Agriculture (FDA) has the primary mandate to fix the food and fibre crops value chains, improve farm productivity, for increased incomes and job creation as well as improve the quality of life of farm families.
  
FUNCTIONS:   The major functions of the Department are as follows:
  • Evolving policies and fix the value chains for the crops sub-sector.
  • Advising on policy matters.
  • Identifying, designing and implementing programs and projects in collaboration with states and   LGAs as well as the private sector.
  • Promoting and fixing the value chains for Tree, Arable and Horticultural crops.
  • Evolving and Promoting Agricultural Engineering, Mechanization and Farm Power policies.
  • Developing and promoting improved storage and on-farm agro-processing technologies for Post-Harvest Food loss prevention.
  • Promoting Home Economics, Nutrition, Gender-sensitive and women related programs in Agriculture.
The Department is focused to:
  • Treat agriculture as a business and no longer as a development program
  •   Concentrate on Value Chains where Nigeria has comparative advantage; and 
  • Develop strategic partnerships to stimulate investment to drive a market led agricultural transformation through States and LGAs, inter-ministerial collaboration, private sector, farmers’ groups and civil societies.
The major crop-based value chains being implemented include:
  •  Tree Crops: Cashew, Cocoa, Oil Palm, and Rubber. 
  •  Oilseeds, Legumes and Fibre: Cotton, Sesame, Groundnut, Soybean 
  • Cereals & Field Crops: Rice, Maize, Wheat, Sorghum, Millet & Sugarcane 
  • Root & Tuber Crops: Cassava, Sweet & Irish Potato, Ginger
  • Horticulture: Fruits & Vegetables
  • Cross Cutting Issues: Crop Protection, Nutrition &Food Security, Mechanization & Engineering, as well as  Cottage Development Programs
